As the 118th Congress enters its second year, it faces many challenges, beginning with the threat of yet another government shutdown. Here’s a rundown of recent activity that gives an indication of what you can expect from Congress this year.

Congressional leaders reach tentative agreement on budget

Congressional leaders announced a tentative agreement to prevent a partial government shutdown on January 20. The deal would preserve funding for key domestic and social safety net programs.

The deadlines to reach an agreement to keep the government open are January 19 and February 2, when the funding expires for various agencies under the current stopgap measure. The funding will expire for the Department of Labor (DOL), the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), and the National Labor Relations Board NLRB on February 2.

After the agreement was announced, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) rejected the demands of his far-right members to reconsider the deal.
