Wyoming Legislature rejecting most antiemployer bills
The Wyoming Legislature continues to churn through its biannual budget session. True to form, the lawmakers have rejected most of the antiemployer measures introduced this year, but employers should continue to pay attention during the session's final days.
Firearms in private vehicles
House Bill (HB) 78, entitled “Firearms in Private Vehicles,” would have restricted employers' rights to enforce rules against firearms on their property. The bill would have prohibited employers from adopting or enforcing any rule preventing an employee who can otherwise legally possess a firearm from having one on the employer's property if it were in a securely locked motor vehicle or a locked container attached to the vehicle and not in plain view from outside the vehicle.
HB78 would have exempted colleges or schools, governmental entities, religious organizations, or places where firearm possession is unlawful under federal law. It also included a provision immunizing employers from civil or criminal liability arising from the “transportation or storage” of a firearm in a vehicle on their property.
The House Transporation Committee voted 6-3 to give the bill a "do pass" recommendation, but house leadership didn't bring it to the house floor for consideration before the deadline for such action. As a result, the bill died.
