Title VII protects LGBTQ workers from workplace bias

The U.S. Supreme Court issued a landmark opinion on June 15 finding Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 does indeed protect LGBTQ individuals from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or transgender status. The Court’s ruling reversed one circuit court of appeals holding and affirmed two others.

6-3 Supreme Court vote

Justice Neil Gorsuch, a Trump appointee, wrote the 6-3 opinion and was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, and Stephen Breyer in the majority. Justices Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, and Clarence Thomas dissented.

For the decision, the Court consolidated three cases filed by former employees alleging sex discrimination based on sexual orientation and transgender status:
