Remember your religious accommodation duties
When talking reasonable accommodations, the first thing that most people think of is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities.
What many of us forget is that there is also a reasonable accommodation requirement under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for the accommodation of sincerely held religious beliefs or practices as long as those accommodations don’t create an undue hardship for the employer. In a brand-new lawsuit, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has alleged that a Charlotte restaurant didn’t fulfill its duties to reasonably accommodate an employee’s religious beliefs.
