New Mexico to begin requiring private employers to provide paid sick leave

Effective July 1, 2022, New Mexico will join 15 other states in requiring private employers to provide paid sick leave under its Healthy Workplaces Act (HWA). The Act will require them to provide up to 64 hours of paid sick leave to their employees each year. It broadly defines "employers" as individuals, partnerships, associations, corporations, business trusts, legal representatives, or any organized groups of persons employing at least one employee at any time, and they must provide paid sick leave to all employees, including full-time, part-time, seasonal, and temporary employees.

Permitted reasons for paid leave

Employees may use paid sick leave for the following reasons:
