Failure to fire ASAP leads to jury trial
Here’s a rule to live by: If you say something is important, then treat it as if it’s important. Failing to follow this rule means State Farm Insurance will face a jury trial to defend against a longtime employee’s retaliation claim.
Longtime employee highlights suspicious numbers
Carla Campbell-Jackson worked a distinguished career at State Farm full of promotions and positive performance reviews for nearly 30 years and transferred to the company’s Special Investigative Unit in 2014. While in this new role, she noted that the company was regularly denying insurance claims filed by Black customers and other minority customers. Several times, she reported her findings to management. Then what?
She received an average review for the first time in her career! She then started violating company policy to build a record. The violation? She emailed customer documents—containing private information—and memos labeled “Internal Use Only” or “Confidential” to her personal email address. This practice triggered an alert in the company email system, notifying State Farm security on March 3, 2016.
