DOL revisits Obama-era baseline for exempt workers

On August 30, the Department of Labor (DOL) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking that would affect the classification status of exempt employees by raising the minimum salary requirement to be exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The current DOL minimum is $684 a week, or approximately $35,568 per year. The new proposal would raise the minimum to $1,059 a week, or approximately $55,068 per year. In general, employers normally aim for a little higher than the minimum to make sure they meet the baseline and avoid possible employee reclassification.
