Biden-Harris cabinet most diverse in American history
Making good on his promise, President Joe Biden has nominated the most diverse cabinet in history—by far. Counting all cabinet-level appointees, this cabinet is evenly split between men and women and has the highest number of minority members in history. This cabinet may be even more diverse than the general population, including the first cabinet member of Native American heritage and the first openly gay secretary. Somewhat surprisingly, the nominees more closely reflect the political preferences of the president, and except for the diversity itself, less attention was paid to satisfying the various political blocs within the Democratic Party.
Significantly, women and minorities hold most of the prominent and important positions at this moment in time: Treasury, Defense, Homeland Security, Director of National Intelligence, Ambassador to the United Nations, Health and Human Services, Energy, Interior, Education, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers. Thus, those leading the administration's efforts to fight the pandemic, heal the economy, restore the environment, address climate change, reestablish public order, rebuild our schools, and repair the country's relationships with the world community will be drawn from the broad sectors of society that make up our country. In addition, the press secretary and the entire White House Communications Office will be female.
